The academic conference activities of GUST English Language and Literature (GELL) began with an idea and a vision.  In 2011 Dr. Ikram Elsherif, Chair of the Research and Conference Committee, proposed the idea to Dr. Piers Smith, then head of the English Department, and Dr. Ali Ansari, CAS Dean.  The idea was received with enthusiasm and preparations for the GELL 1st International Conference began.  The conference was hosted by the English Department at the Gulf university for Science and Technology in April, 2012 and it was a great success and this success paved the way for the GELL Creative Writing Seminars and Workshops which were again hosted by the English Department in April 2013. Both events attracted international and local audience participation and this has encouraged us to organize the GELL 2nd International Conference in 2015, which was followed in 2016 by the GELL Translation Seminars and Workshops.  

In all GELL events, established international creative writers, literary critics, linguists, academics and translators were hosted as keynotes and guest speakers.
